Maureen Palella, a student at Roosevelt University, has created a brochure to give to parents that includes reading strategies.

Maureen recommends using the brochure with parents of students in grades K-2 to introduce how to determine the main topic and key details of a text. “I would read an informational text to the families, model how to think aloud and mark the main topic and key details of the text using sticky notes. My hope would be to build excitement about starting research and using this skill in their home while reading informational texts. Identifying the main topic and key details of a text, means students have a deeper understanding of what they read and by practicing it at home, it can improve student accuracy at school.”
