CARA Awards

The Board of Directors is pleased to announce three awards to enhance literacy instruction! Applications are due April 1. Awards will be presented at our April Professional Learning Event.

Dr. Peggy Williams Award

Dr. Peggy Williams was a beloved professor of Reading at Chicago State University and a dedicated member of CARA's Board of Directors. She devoted her professional life to supporting literacy learning and preparing reading teachers. CARA has established an award in her memory to support a specific literacy instructional project. Classroom teachers are invited to submit an application for an award of $300 to purchase books and instructional materials for a specific literacy instructional project.

 Dr. Mattie Williams Award

Dr. Mattie Williams was a literacy instructional leader in Chicago Public Schools and a dedicated member of CARA's Board of Directors. Dr. Williams devoted her professional life to advocating on behalf of literacy teachers. CARA has established an award in her memory to support teachers' professional growth in literacy education. Professionals in roles of literacy instructional leadership are invited to submit an application for an award of $500 to purchase materials for a specific professional development project. Literacy leaders at the department, building, network, or district level may apply.  

 Dr. Hattie Spires Award

Dr. Hattie Spires was Principal of Duke Ellington Elementary School, President of CARA, and President of Illinois Reading Council. CARA has established an award in her memory for Chicago Metropolitan Area Principals. You may submit a nomination form for a principal who provides exemplary leadership and support for literacy learning. Awardees will receive two one-year memberships in CARA and IRC and a gift certificate to attend a CARA Professional Development event.
